About

Stuttering is a word you’ve probably heard in your life. Whether in a television show or a movie, a person who has a stutter is depicted as someone who is always anxious, nervous, and awkward. They can’t seem to say what they want, and their words come out in bits and pieces. The truth is, most of the world doesn’t know what having a stutter is. Having a stutter is very different than just someone who stutters sometimes when they are nervous and they fumble their words. Stuttering is a very complicated issue and since no one really knows what it is, it’s very important to learn about its background and how it affects more people than you think.

Stuttering is a communication disorder that includes disruptions and disfluencies in someone’s speech. Many stutterers experience repetitions, (m-m-m-my name is…) prolongations, (wwwwwelcome) or blocks, (when there is no sound coming out when they are trying to say a word). How often stutterers experience these varies from day to day, month to month, and even year to year. In addition to these disfluencies, stutterers also produce physical change when they stutter such as closing/blinking of the eyes and head movements. When these symptoms all come together it makes it challenging for the stutterer to communicate, and can damage mental health as well.
