Causes

There has never been a clear indicator as to what the main cause of stuttering is. One factor that has been proven is that stuttering is inherited. Around 60% of stutterers have a family member or history of stuttering as well.

Another factor that contributes to stuttering is child development. Children who automatically have speech or language problems as young infants will most likely develop a speech disorder as they grow older.

Recent neuro research has also proven that people who stutter process speech in their brains differently than fluent speakers, which shows a brain difference in people who stutter and other speech disorders.

As well as this, family dynamics can have an impact on the way someone talks. Different lifestyles and home situations can have a huge impact on someone's speech. If they grow up and are surrounded by trauma and other life changing events it can change the way they feel in different situations; and for some cause a stutter or speech disorder.
